Parenthood is often described as a life-changing journey—a mix of joy, challenges, and endless love. But for parents with babies in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) or SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit), this journey takes a different turn. It’s one filled with medical uncertainties, emotional highs and lows, and a deep longing for support during an incredibly vulnerable time.
I know this reality all too well.
When my daughter was born prematurely, I found myself thrown into a world I hadn’t prepared for. The weeks spent in the neonatal unit were some of the most intense of my life. They were marked by moments of hope but also by deep anxiety and exhaustion. Alongside the constant worry for my baby’s health, I often felt lost in navigating the support available to me.
My experience wasn’t just shaped by my daughter’s story. It was deeply intertwined with my own.
I was born prematurely myself, and my twin brother, Nicholas, did not survive. That loss has been a part of me my entire life, shaping my perspective and my empathy for parents facing similar journeys. Decades ago, there wasn’t much in the way of support for parents grieving a loss or navigating the challenges of prematurity. When my daughter was born, I felt the weight of my own history but also a determination: I wanted to ensure other parents didn’t feel as alone as I once did.
A Lifeline for Parents in Need
Through my own journey, I realised how vital support is for parents in the NICU/SCBU. Whether it’s emotional guidance, financial assistance, or simply a space to feel heard, these resources can be a lifeline. But I also learned how hard it can be to find them when you’re in the midst of hospital stays, medical jargon, and sleepless nights.
That’s why I’m creating a database of charities specifically for NICU and SCBU parents.
This database is designed to be a one-stop resource where parents can quickly and easily find the help they need. It will include:
• Emotional Support: Charities that offer counselling, peer networks, and bereavement support.
• Practical Help: Organisations providing everything from free accommodation near hospitals to childcare for siblings.
• Financial Assistance: Resources to help with the unexpected costs of having a baby in the NICU or SCBU.
• Community Connections: Links to groups where parents can share their experiences with others who truly understand.
Why This Mission Matters
Creating this database is deeply personal for me. It’s not just about gathering information; it’s about offering parents something I wish I had during my own journey: a sense of community and a clear path to support.
For parents in the NICU or SCBU, time is precious, and so is energy. Searching for help shouldn’t be another overwhelming task on top of everything else. My goal is to make accessing support as simple as possible, so parents can focus on what matters most—their baby and their own wellbeing.
I also hope this database becomes a way to honour all the babies who have fought hard battles in the neonatal unit and the families who have loved them through it. It’s a way to ensure their stories inspire change and support for others.
How You Can Help
To make this database as comprehensive as possible, I need your help. If you know of charities, organisations, or initiatives that support parents of NICU/SCBU babies, I’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a large national organisation or a small local charity, every resource matters.
Together, we can create something that truly makes a difference.
This project is more than a resource; it’s a reflection of my heart and my hope for a future where no parent feels isolated in their neonatal journey. Because every parent deserves to feel seen, supported, and understood.
Thank you for being part of this mission.
If you’d like to share a recommendation or learn more about the database, please get in touch. Let’s build this lifeline together.
