Yesterday, something beautiful happened—something that reminded me of the power of connection and how even small gestures can have a huge impact. My husband attended a Dad La Soul event, a brilliant community initiative that brings dads together to support one another. While there, he met Dan, someone I’ve never met in person, but who knew about the work I’ve been doing.
Dan said hi and shared that he’s impressed with what I’ve been creating. It might sound simple, but those words meant the world to me.
As someone who has poured my heart into advocating for parents—especially those navigating the challenges of premature birth, neurodiversity, or the general rollercoaster of parenthood—it’s easy to wonder if the work you’re doing is making a difference. Moments like this remind me that it is.
Why Recognition Matters
When you dedicate yourself to helping others, it often comes from a deeply personal place. For me, my journey started with my own experiences of being born prematurely and later becoming a mum to a premature baby. Those challenges shaped who I am today and inspired me to create resources, books, and a podcast to help other parents feel less alone.
But when you’re working hard behind the scenes—whether writing, researching, or simply sharing your story—it’s easy to feel like you’re shouting into the void. Recognition like Dan’s is a powerful reminder that your voice is being heard, your work is being seen, and your impact is real.
The Role of Communities Like Dad La Soul
I’ve always believed in the importance of community, and Dad La Soul is a shining example of that. It’s a space where dads can come together, share their stories, and feel supported. Often, parenting communities are geared towards mums, so seeing a space that prioritises fathers’ experiences is refreshing and needed.
When my husband came home and told me about Dan’s kind words, it reinforced the importance of community—not just for parents, but for anyone trying to make a difference. When we come together, lift each other up, and celebrate each other’s work, it creates a ripple effect.
Fuelled to Keep Going
As I reflect on this small yet meaningful moment, I feel re-energised. Knowing that someone sees the work I’m doing and values it is a reminder of why I started this journey in the first place.
So, to Dan and others like him: thank you. Your words carry more weight than you know. They fuel the passion, dedication, and drive to keep creating, writing, and advocating.
And to my readers, listeners, and followers: thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you’ve read a blog, listened to my podcast, or shared a post, you are part of the reason I do this.
Let’s continue to lift each other up, celebrate the work being done, and recognise the impact we can all have. Together, we are stronger.
