When we’re young, we’re often asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The answers can range from astronaut to teacher, doctor to dancer. But what happens when those childhood dreams change? Life experiences, personal growth, and even moments of self-doubt can shape and reshape our career aspirations. Let me share my journey to illustrate just how much dream jobs can evolve.

The First Dream: Nursing
Growing up, I wanted to be a nurse. That dream stayed with me until I was 18. I even began an NVQ in Care to work towards my goal, driven by a deep desire to help others. But halfway through, something shifted. I met someone studying beauty therapy, and their confidence and passion caught my attention.
By that point, my self-esteem was so low that I started doubting whether I had what it took to become a nurse. The thought of failing terrified me, so I changed direction and pursued an NVQ in Beauty Therapy. Looking back, I can see that this decision wasn’t just about a change in interest—it was about finding something that felt achievable in that moment of self-doubt.
The Detour: Beauty Therapy and Bullying
Studying beauty therapy wasn’t without its challenges. I had to attend two different colleges due to bullying, which further impacted my confidence. Yet, during this time, something unexpected happened that changed my path once again.
Steiner Transocean Ltd visited my college to talk about opportunities to work on cruise ships. Their presentation lit a spark in me, and I decided to take the leap. It was a decision that would transform my life.
A Life-Changing Opportunity: Working on Cruise Ships
Working on cruise ships gave me the chance to travel the world, meet incredible people, and most importantly, build my confidence. For three years, I gained experiences that no classroom could have provided. I learned resilience, independence, and the value of stepping out of my comfort zone.
When I returned home, I felt ready to tackle a new challenge. My time on the ships gave me the courage to pursue an access course, which ultimately led to my degree in podiatry.
Finding My True Purpose
Becoming a podiatrist was another step in my evolving journey. It gave me clinical knowledge and a foundation in helping people—a thread that has been consistent throughout all my career aspirations. But life had one more twist for me.
When my daughter Amelia was born prematurely, everything changed. My personal experiences of being a parent to a premature baby, combined with my own neurodivergence and my husband’s, gave me a new sense of purpose. I realised I wanted to dedicate my life to supporting families like mine—parents of premature babies and those navigating life with neurodiversity.
This purpose has led me to start my business, write books, and connect with parents who need support, empathy, and resources. It’s a far cry from my childhood dream of nursing, but in many ways, it’s exactly where I was meant to end up.
How Dreams Evolve
Our dream jobs don’t always stay the same, and that’s okay. As we grow, our experiences shape who we are and what we want from life. Sometimes, detours—like my shift to beauty therapy—teach us valuable lessons. Other times, opportunities—like working on cruise ships—open doors we never imagined.
What’s most important is staying open to change and recognising that every step, even the ones that feel like a setback, can lead us closer to our true purpose.
A Call to Reflect
Think about your own career journey. Has it followed a straight line, or have there been twists and turns along the way? Embrace those changes—they’re often where we grow the most.
If you’re at a crossroads or questioning your path, take heart in knowing that it’s never too late to redefine your dream job. Life has a way of guiding us to where we’re meant to be.
