This morning, I had everything mapped out. Amelia was going to the crèche, and I was going to get a few hours of work done. It was one of those rare moments when everything seemed to be falling into place.
Except, when we got there, she wasn’t booked in.
My bad!
That sinking feeling hit almost instantly. The realisation that I’d made a mistake, the frustration of losing those precious work hours, and the sheer exhaustion of having to rethink the entire day on the spot. For a moment, I just wanted to cry.
And to top it all off? The weather was miserable, and because of my health, I’m not allowed to drive anymore—so it was a 25-minute walk each way. That’s nearly an hour of walking in the rain for absolutely nothing. Not exactly the smooth start to the day I’d imagined!
The Reality of Parenting: Plans Are Made to Be Broken
If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a parent, it’s that flexibility is key. No matter how organised I try to be, there will always be something unexpected—a missed booking, a forgotten bag, a last-minute change of plans. It’s part of the journey.
I could have let frustration take over. I could have spent the day beating myself up over the mistake. But I knew that wouldn’t help. So, I took a deep breath, reminded myself that these things happen, and figured out how to move forward.
Resilience: The Most Underrated Parenting Skill
Being a parent means constantly shifting and adapting. It means making quick decisions when things don’t go as expected, even when you feel overwhelmed. It means learning to laugh at the chaos (even if it takes a while to see the funny side!).
So, instead of getting stressed, I focused on what I could do with the day. More time with Amelia, a chance to step back and slow down, and the knowledge that next time, I’ll double-check the booking!
We’re All Doing Our Best
If you’ve ever had a day that completely derailed, I see you. I know how frustrating it can be when things don’t go to plan—especially when the weather is awful and the simple task of getting from A to B is exhausting. But we’re all just doing our best, and sometimes, the best thing we can do is embrace the mess, adjust our expectations, and carry on.
